  Individual Therapy

I serve individuals having difficulty with anxiety, depression, relationships, careers, divorce, parenting, troubled childhoods, trauma, grief, and health-related issues such as chronic pain and sleep problems. My approach to individual psychotherapy prioritizes client needs and goals. I have training in a variety of therapeutic approaches, and use the method and skills most suitable to each client, bearing in mind that these may change over time. For example, a person coming to me for help with panic disorder might benefit most at first from work that specifically targets panic-related fears and behaviors. Once these are addressed, he/she may benefit more from an insight-oriented approach to understanding the more long-standing contributions to their anxiety.

Establishing a safe and nurturing environment, respectful of each client's individual experiences, is an essential and critical basis of my therapy practice.

  Couples Therapy

As with my individual work, my focus in couples work is on the client's needs and goals, except that here the client is the relationship. I use a systems perspective, meaning that I work to assist the members of the couple in understanding how their individual thoughts, feelings, and behaviors impact and influence the relationship in a reciprocal manner. The goal is not to establish blame, but rather to understand the relationship dynamics and attend to how each member contributes to, and has the potential to change, these patterns.

Couples' therapeutic assessment is another extremely powerful tool I use for understanding and helping a relationship. This is a brief, focused analysis of the relationship patterns created by the couple. In a short period of time, couples can understand their problematic cycles and clarify what needs to happen for improvement. See What is therapeutic assessment?

  Family TherapyBack to Top

I take a systems approach, viewing the family as a system that each member participates in, and contributes to. My first goal is to join with your family and gain understanding of each member's experience in the family system. I then work to promote healthy change by providing appropriately-paced activities, directions, and modeling that shift your family dynamics. Much of the work is engaging and even fun, involving such activities as drawing and using puppets.
